Hoag Hospital NICU Expansion

In late 2026, Hoag Hospital will expand their existing Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and relocate the Fetal Diagnostics department on their Newport Beach campus to accommodate growing patient volumes. The design team was asked to create a space plan that maximized the number of new private rooms, minimized noise and disturbance for the tiny patients just entering into the world, while also capitalizing on the majestic views of the Newport Beach Peninsula. There was also a need for enhanced visitor infection control measures and expanded nutrition lab.

Located on the sixth floor of the East Tower, the remodel includes 11 additional private rooms plus one twin patient room with clinical support spaces. Administrative offices for the NICU were relocated. The Fetal Diagnostic Department was also relocated and includes a reception and waiting area and four exam rooms. Both departments will have access to an upgraded family lounge, complete with space for socializing, reflection, and visiting family.
